Located on the pious banks of the river Nagavali in Srikakulam, the Government Medical College, Srikakulam was established in the year 2008 by then the Chief Minister late Dr.Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy garu. It is well known as RIMS (Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences), Srikakulam and is extended over an area of 35.97 acres.
GMC (Government Medical College) has started its journey as a small tertiary care teaching hospital exclusively for Srikakulam district people with 100 MBBS seats as intake to the present m150 MBBS seats and 21 PG students intake per year.

The GMC&H are fully furnished with mighty halls and classrooms, Library, 5 Hostels, through its Auditorium, Basket ball, volley ball, badminton court, walking track, etc and indoor recreation halls.
The journey in PG seats started with only pg seats in MD Physiology and later has expanded to Orthopedic, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology ,Pediatrics, Pathology and Community Medicine and more PG seats in other broad pecializations like General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery etc is under planning.
At the GMC, the departments anatomy, physiology and biochemistry form the basis for modern medicine starts right through first year of MBBS and stays forever in the life of every medical graduate. The pharmacology department has been active in Pharmacovigilance. Microbiology, Pathology, Biochemistry forms the supporting departments for laboratory and diagnostic services. Forensic medicine is one of its kind for forensic related areas to be addressed in the district. Community medicine is unique in bridging the needs of people and the teaching of medical graduates on a single platform.
The GGH attached to GMC as a teaching hospital has been catering to various needs of people like dialysis, blood bank, Sadaram, etc. VDRL located in GMC has been established since 2020 in the recent times of COVID 19 pandemic, this college and hospital stood as a backbone to the health care facility in the district with more than 800oxygen beds including ICUS with 1OKL &,20 KL liquid oxygen plants. Under the surveillance of COVID control room located in GMC has witnessed approximately thousands of COVID cases have been admitted. The support of Dept of General medicine, Pulmonology, Anesthesja and Radiology in covid case management is laudable. The ENT and Ophthalmology department has been the destiny for their specialities for the district and may be the only tertiary level institute to manage Mucor mycosis. Obstetrics and Paediatrics, services, Dialysis patient care, general ops and casualty, blood bank services etc have been uninterruptedly delivered for covid and non-covid through-out its journey.
Our college is the one which brings smiles on the faces of patients, gives shape to the dreams of students and provides satisfaction to the faculty who work here. With its substantial history, assiduous present, it will go ahead into magnificent future.

Srikakulam district is one of the twenty-six districts of the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh , located in the Uttarandhra region of the state, with its headquarters located at Srikakulam. It is one of the six districts, located in the extreme northeastern direction of the state. It was formerly known as Chicacole, and was under Ganjam district till 1936 April 1, then merged under Vizagpatam district . Srikakulam district forms the core area of Kalinga where most of its historical capitals like Kalinganagari, pithunda, Dantapuram are located.
